Tropical storm Haima left 18 dead, 81 injured and 10 missing while destroying a great deal of property in Vietnam, according to preliminary statistics.

Mud overflowed into schools, reaching levels as high as 1.2 metres

The storm destroyed thousands of houses, tore the roof off a large number of houses and caused a great deal of damage to rice crops, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said on June 25.

The areas hardest hit hard by the storm included Haiphong, and the central provinces of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa.

Hundreds of households in mountainous localities of Thanh Hoa and the northern province of Lao Cai were evacuated to safe places to avoid the effects of landslides and flash floods.

As of the morning of June 25, all schools in Tuong Duong District’s Yen Tinh Commune of Nghe An were still flooded and could not be used.

Mud overflowed into schools, reaching levels as high as 1.2 metres. Some schools were under 4 metres of water, which ruined a great amount of education materials.

Vi Vu Quang, Chairman of Yen Tinh communal People’s Committee said, “A primary school in Hat highlands village was greatly damaged. The school was built just one year ago and cost more than VND1 billion (USD48,300).”

According to Quang, it would be highly unlikely that the students would have a new school in the coming year.

“We will have to build a make-shift school out of local timber for students,” he added.

Dozens of houses and one primary school in Anh Son Township were still flooded as of the afternoon of June 26, while several houses were still under between 30 and 40 centimetres of water.

As of this morning, June 27, thousands of hectares of crops and a wide range of houses in localities from Con Cuong to Do Luong Districts in Nghe An were still flooded.

Nguyen Van Quynh, a farmer in Con Cuong, said, “We were shocked by how rapidly the waters rose. We simply had no time to react.”
