Vietnam, Bangladesh foster multifaceted ties
Vietnam and Bangladesh have agreed to bring two-way trade to 1 billion USD in the next five years, apart from further boosting bilateral ties in politics, security, defence, economics, trade and investment.
The agreement was reached at the talks between Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his visiting Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina in Hanoi on November 2.
The two PMs also agreed to encourage bilateral cooperation in fields of the two countries’ strength like agriculture, aquaculture, information and communications.
They consented to hold the second meeting of the joint committee on economic, trade, cultural, and scientific and technological cooperation and the first political consultation between the two Foreign Ministries in 2013.
Discussing regional and international issues of mutual concern, the two sides pledged to continue working closely at international forums like the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), and the East – West Corridor (EWC).
They also reached a consensus on promoting global links in addressing climate change and food security, supporting maritime freedom, and settling disputes by peaceful measures in accordance with international law.
On this occasion, Bangladesh recognised Vietnam as a market economy.
After the talks, both Dung and Hasina witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on animal husbandry and aquaculture cooperation, an agreement on extending the MoU on agricultural cooperation, an MoU on bilateral trade promotion, and an agreement on establishing the Bangladesh – Vietnam and the Vietnam – Bangladesh Business Councils.
