Hundreds of workers at a factory in Cam Tu Commune, Thanh Hoa Province, run by Hanoi-based Ho Guom Garment Company, went on strike after they were insulted during lunchtime.

The dispute started June 3 when many workers found their meals under-cooked and reported the issue to their managers. Instead of working to resolve the problem, Ninh Thi Ty, Chairwoman, said that because the workers were from rural villages they were accustomed to such food.

One of the workers said that Ty commented, "If you don't like the food then just go home."

Hundreds of workers went on strike after the incident, demanding a full apology from the chairwoman. Ty, however, ignored the labourers and went on a trip to Hanoi instead.

The factory's executive board, on the other hand, was forced to cooperate with the Cam Tu People's Committee, who arbitrated a meeting between management and workers, with the communal police being called in to prevent escalation. After three days of strike, it has been reported that workers began returning to their jobs on June 6.

Trinh Thi Khanh, head of the labour union in Cam Thuy District, said that several disputes have taken place ofver the past three years at the factory.

In 2011, around one hundred workers suffered from food poisoning, suspected to have been a result of food served at the plant. Many of those workers have been working at the factory for years and still lack insurance or even valid labour contracts.
