The Olympic Council of Asia has acquiesced to Vietnam’s bid to withdraw from staging the 18th Asian Games (ASIAD 18) in 2019.

Receiving a Vietnamese delegation at OCA Headquarters in Kuwait on April 23, OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah was sympathetic with the difficulties facing Vietnam and affirmed that Vietnam won’t be penalised in any manner for the decision.

In an open and constructive dialogue, Vietnamese Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh said Vietnam is not experienced in organising such large sporting events and the financial burden is much too onerous, especially in the context of the economic slowdown.

Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Olympic Committee Hoang Vinh Giang also provided persuasive reasons buttressing Vietnam’s decision.

At the working session, Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to host the Asian Beach Games in 2016 in Nha Trang and said preparations are proceeding on schedule.
