The Vietnam U-19 football team will challenge themselves at the 2014 Southeast Asian (SEA) U-19 Championship, hosted in Vietnam from September 5-13, which is considered a perfect warm-up for the team ahead of their Asian U-19 finals campaign.

U-19 Vietnam (in white) once beat U19 Australia 5-1 in last year’s championship.
U-19 Vietnam (in white) once beat U19 Australia 5-1 in last year’s championship.

Differing from last year’s event, the 2014 competition is only open to the four teams: Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar, which have already qualified for the final stage of the Asian U-19 Championship in Myanmar’s Yangon and Naypyidaw next October.

Four SEA teams will join two invitees, U-19 Japan and U-19 Australia in group-stage round robin tournaments, with Thailand, Myanmar and Indonesia making up Group B and the remainder belonging to Group A.

The top two finishers from each group will challenge each other in the semifinal round to decide the two finalists.

U-19 Vietnam have targeted success at this year’s event, with their confidence boosted by a stunning 5-1 victory over U-19 Australia at the 2013 competition. These two teams will meet each other in their Group B opener, scheduled on September 5.
