 >>  Power outage holds up air traffic in HCM City

The Ministry of Transport announced that all incompetent employees would be dismissed following a power outage at the HCM City air control tower.

Lai Xuan Thanh, the head of Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority, said, "The power failure on November 20 was very likely caused by human error, since the technical system is 99% safe."

On November 20, the technical crew found that one of the three uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) shut down. In trying to fix it, the head of the crew mistakenly shut down the other two UPS. The rest of the crew did not interfere until they saw that he had failed to restore the electric grid. The power failure lasted for more than one hour.

The Ministsry of Transport ordered a check on maintenance procedures and the team's ability to respond to technical errors. An investigative team led by head of CAAV in HCM City has been charged with this task and must report to the ministry by December 10.

The human resources department will also be reviewed and incompetent employees will be dismissed or retrained. Since Tan Son Nhat is a joint civilian and military airport, the Ministry of Transport has asked the Ministry of Public that the CAAV in HCM City be listed as important construction related to national defense.

The power failure Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority control tower in HCM caused a near-miss between a civilian and a military aircraft and affected a total of 92 flights, both domestic and international. Thanh said, "This is a serious incident which threatened flight safety and damaged Vietnam's reputation in terms of aviation operations."
