Two Vietnamese fishing boats have just returned to port in Quang Ngai province with damages caused by Chinese ships near Hoang Sa Island.

Captain Do Van Nam's boat departed on November 8 and arrived at their fishing spots near Da Loi Island a few days later, when a Chinese ship suddenly appeared and started attacking. "They jumped onto our boat, using clubs to destroy our cabin and equipment before tearing up our nets. About one hour later, two other Chinese ships came and sprayed water at us," Nam said.

The boat almost sank due to the damages. Nam sent SOS signals to other fishing boats who came and helped bring the vessel back to port. The damage is estimated at VND200 million (USD9,500).

On the same day, a fishing boat captained by Le De was also sprayed with water by Chinese ships. He said, "We were pulling up the nets when the Chinese ships came. We tried to move away but they started attacking. Because of the urgency of the situation, I decided to abandon the nets so we could move faster."

Not only did they lose their nets, the boat's windows were also broken bringing the total damage to VND20 million. De then met up with Nam at sea before returning to Binh Son District.

Authorities and border guards in Sa Ky Port are investigating the case.
