Five people were killed and nine seriously injured when a farm truck collided with a container truck in the central highlands province of Gia Lai on November 27.

Scene of the accident

At 9pm, a small farm truck carrying 14 people was suddenly hit from behind by a container truck on Highway 14 in Ia Khuoi Commune. Five people on the farm truck died immediately and nine were transferred to hospital. After the crash, the container truck driver panicked, drove for two more kilometres then jumped out and ran away.

Gia Lai Province provided VND5m (USD238) to the families of the deceased and VND3m to injured people. The case is under investigation.

Vietnam’s rural areas still have many cannibalised or heavily modified heavy vehicles that often lack lights, signals or horn. They are also unregistered vehicles and most drivers don't have licences. However, people still flout the laws and commonly use the trucks to carry large amounts of goods or large numbers of people on the highways in the highlands and have often been blamed for accidents.

Early this year, a pupil died in a crash because the truck drivers couldn't see well in the dark. In January, a grandmother and her grandchild died while nine other injured because the truck driver lost control while speeding.
