Hanoi has put into operation 100 cameras to help local traffic managers penalise road traffic violators, according to head of the Traffic Police Department Colonel Dao Vinh Thang.

Under the new system, cameras will snap a photo of those breaking traffic rules. Police will then use the licence plate information to determine their home address and send a ticket in the mail.

"Motorbike owners without a legitimate ownership certificate will be temporarily seized," Thang noted.

"We believe this new method will help manage traffic better and improve road behaviour," he said.

While this will be the first time the city has sent tickets to home addresses, Hanoi currently has 450 traffic cameras that have helped police issue over 2,000 fines during the first 10 months of 2015, with violations including running red lights, driving the wrong way down roads wrong lanes, and making illegal turns.
