Vietnamese education is facing the pressure of teacher redundancies while more and more pedagogical students have been unemployed after graduation.

The situation, according to experts, is due to an improper calculation between supply and demand. Besides, the massive number of teachers training institutes is also contributing to the problem.

Viet Nam currently has 120 teachers training universities and colleges nationwide. Each province has one teacher training school, according to Ministry of Education and Training (MoET).

The ministry's statistics also show 35,000 excess secondary and high school teachers across the country as of 2014.

Associate Professor Tran Xuan Nhi, former MoET's deputy minister, said that there should not be so many pedagogical universities and colleges but only 30 to 40 schools under State management.

In the remote areas, every two provinces should have one teachers training institute to take the best advantage of local human resources, he added.

Educational experts also suggested that MoET and Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs work with local authorities by assigning a standard number of recruited teachers to each locality.

Doctor Nguyen Tung Lam, president of the Ha Noi Education Psychology Association said that the most important part of creating jobs for pedagogical graduates was that lecturers of teacher training institutes must be high-qualified. Curriculum must be changed in line with requirements to renew education.

In case of teacher redundancy, universities and colleges should reduce the standard number of recruited students and prioritise outstanding ones. During the study, students who can not meet requirements must be moved to another sector, he said.
