Traffic accidents kill 2,000 people in first quarter

Traffic accidents have killed around 2,100 people and injured 3,800 others in Vietnam in the first three months this year, according to a report of the National Committee for Traffic Safety.

The committee said there were 80 fewer deaths compared to the same period last year, and 687 fewer injuries.

The total number of traffic accidents was 4,800; 175 cases fewer than in the same phase of 2016.

In February alone, the country saw 1,350 traffic accidents with more than 540 deaths and 1,200 injuries, down 20, 59 and 20 respectively against last year.

This year, Vietnam set a target to cut traffic accidents, deaths and injuries by up to 10% compared to 2016. Hanoi and HCM City authorities have been asked to eliminate traffic jams which last more than 30 minutes.
