The incident occurred on flight VN170 travelling from Da Nang city to Hanoi at noon on November 17 last year.

During the journey, two passengers noticed Gui moving and rummaging through an overhead black suitcase that appeared not to belong to him.

They informed the chief steward of his suspicious behavior who then looked for the owner of the suitcase. They could not find the owner Nguyen Van Thieng, from Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi until the aircraft landed at Noi Bai International Airport.

Thieng was asked to check his luggage and discovered 4,000 USD and 50 million VND in cash was missing.

The Chinese man was detained by the crew at the aircraft door where he was caught attempting to pull wads of USD and VND bills out of his pockets and drop them on the floor.

Gui had two previous convictions for theft in China.
