In June alone, the country saw 1,569 traffic accidents with 643 fatalities and 1,348 injuries.

This month, the committee has sent four groups to localities nationwide to check traffic safety under the prime minister’s instructions.

The committee has asked the Ministry of Transport to tighten control over the granting of driving licences and how businesses in the transport sector work.

Between January and June this year, 141,609 new cars and 1.2 million new motorbikes were registered nationwide.

This year, the country aims to reduce road and railway accidents by 5 to 10% compared to 2016, and at least 5% of serious accidents involving railways, inland waterways and coaches.

Hanoi and HCM City authorities have been asked to eliminate traffic jams which last more than 30 minutes.
