He noted that the results of research are scheduled to be reported to the Ministry of Transport in early September and later to the Prime Minister to work out the best solutions for the expansion of the overloaded airport.

Secretary Nhan made the statement at the meeting with voters in Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City on June 25 who voiced concerns about the plan to build a golf course on a plot of land adjacent to Tan Son Nhat airport owned by the military.

"Is the construction of a golf course within the boundaries of Tan Son Nhat airport the right or wrong decision? If it is the right decision, the State must protect any enterprise spending thousands of billions of Vietnamese dong on it, but if it is wrong, it must be removed immediately as it cannot be permitted to commence," said voter Nguyen Khan.

In answer to Khan's question, Secretary Nhan said that he himself has yet to thoroughly study the project and the implementation of the golf course project was the proposal of the Ministry of Defence which was previously agreed on by the Government and several ministries and sectors.

However, due to the airport often facing overload in recent years, it is necessary to consider the expansion of the airport, Nhan noted.

The Secretary said that as a citizen of Ho Chi Minh City for 23 years, he wrote a letter to the Prime Minister suggesting him not to approve the plan on expanding Tan Son Nhat airport submitted by the Ministry of Transport earlier because the plan did not consider the expansion of the golf course to the north. Nhan recommended the Prime Minister to consider this solution.

Subsequently, the PM held a meeting with ministries and sectors to discuss hiring a foreign consultancy company to work out plans to expand Tan Son Nhat Airport, including a plan using the golf course to be reported to the Government by the end of the year.

Secretary Nhan added that in the recent meeting between the city leaders with the PM and representatives from 15 ministries, the airport expansion issue was also discussed.

At the meeting, Lieutenant General Le Chiem, Deputy Minister of Defense affirmed that if the city needs to use the golf course to expand the airport, the Ministry of Defence is ready to hand it over.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City established a group of eight experts in the field of aviation, including former pilot Nguyen Thanh Trung to study the issue in order to comment on the plans for the airport expansion.

Nhan affirmed that the study results will be reported to the Ministry of Transport and the PM in early September this year with the aim of effectively using the airport to connect it to traffic in the region.

The city's Party chief added that there is only Truong Son road leading to Tan Son Nhat airport, thus congestion is inevitable, noting that an additional gateway in the north may be a good solution.
