Vietnamese Embassy in Chile explains shark fins origin

The shark fins found on the roof of a Trade Office building inside the Embassy of Vietnam in Chile were bought at a local market, according to the embassy.

The Embassy of Vietnam in Chile on Tuesday told the media that a relative of staff at the embassy bought the shark fins at a market in Santiago de Chile for his family use.

"We have reported the issue to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs following minister Tran Tuan Anh's request on January 22," the embassy said.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has also sent a dispatch to the Ministry of Foreign Affair requesting its co-ordination in verifying the case with the Vietnamese embassy in Chile and working closely with Chilean authorities to handle the case in accordance with local law.

Chilean online newspaper El Mostrador January 19 published photos showing shark fins on the roof of a Trade Office building inside the Vietnamese embassy.

The newspaper reported that neighbours of the Vietnamese embassy, located in Santiago, had smelled a foul odour coming from the diplomatic residence.
