Traffic accidents kill 87 on first three days of Tet

Some 101 traffic accidents happened during the first three days of the Tet Holiday, leaving 87 dead and 84 others injured, the National Committee for Traffic Safety reported.

According to the committee, 46 traffic accidents happened on the first day of the Lunar New Year, causing 34 fatalities and 35 others injuries, compared to 23 deaths and 32 injuries on the same day of the last year.

During these three days, traffic police nationwide settled more than 3,000 violations with a total fine of nearly VND1 billion (USD45,454), confiscating over 500 vehicles.

Most of the accidents were caused by drunk driving.

The National Committee for Traffic Safety also said that a total of 20,280 traffic accidents occurred in Vietnam in 2017, causing at least 8,279 deaths and 17,040 injuries.

Compared to 2016, traffic accidents fell 7% and deaths declined 4.7%; serious injuries dropped 9.6% and light injuries down 12.6%.
