Vietnam aims to complete roll-out of cashless tolling by 2019
The Directorate for Roads of Vietnam (DRVN) has requested all of the toll stations in Vietnam to employ an electronic toll collection system by the end of 2019, in an effort to make the collections more transparent.
The directorate also requires that all of Vietnam’s 2.8 million automotive vehicles are installed with electronic tags, which it said have only been fit onto 500,000 cars.
DRVN General Director Nguyen Van Huyen said that all of the toll booths on National Highway 1 and National Highway 14 will go cashless by the end of 2018, therefore if cars are not installed with the electronic tags, the toll collection will encounter problems.
According to Vu Van Toan, head of the DRVN’s department of international cooperation, the electronic toll collection system is beneficial in many ways, especially in making the fees more transparent and reducing traffic congestion.
He added that the investors and the DRVN can also access the system at any time to check the toll collection.
Meanwhile the electronic tags will make it easier to detect the vehicles that use fake license plates or fail to renew their registration.
The electronic toll collection system was first piloted in Vietnam in 2010 and began to be officially rolled out in 2016.
