Six fishermen from Quang Ngai Province have been rescued after their boat was attacked and sunk by two Chinese ships near the Paracel Islands.

Six fishermen transferred home safely

50-year-old Nguyen Ngot, captain of the fishing boat said their voyage started in early April. On April 20, they were fishing about seven nautical miles away from the Paracel Islands when two Chinese ships came and chased them.

Ngot said, "They kept ramming us until our engine died and the boat was damaged. Five Chinese men with guns jumped on board and forced us to sign some documents. One hour later, they left but our boat was sinking."

The boat owner Nguyen Chinh said they quickly searched for Ngot after receiving his SOS signal. When they arrived, the boat was partly under the water and the crew were panicking. Chinh said the fishermen were all exhausted.

On April 22, Ngot and the crew were transferred to the mainland safely. The border guards in Quang Ngai Province confirmed the case.

Phan Huy Hoang, chairman of Quang Ngai Province Fishery Association, said they had sent official letters to Vietnam Fishery Association and Quang Ngai People's Committee to protest against the action of the Chinese ships.

"We strongly condemn such humanitarian action from China which threatens the lives and property of the fishermen. We ask the Vietnam Fishery Association and state agencies to have measures against such action and ask China to compensate our fishermen," Hoang said.

According to Nguyen Thanh Hung, head of Binh Chau Commune's fishery union, they had over 100 boats actively working near the Spratly and Paracel Islands. More than 10 boats from Binh Chau have been attacked and damaged by Chinese ships since March.
