HCM City saw lower number of traffic accidents between January and mid-May this year compared to the same period of last year; however, the number of deaths were higher.

The information was given by the municipal Department of Transport at a press conference on June 19.

Traffic jam in HCM City

The department reported that from January to May 15 this year, HCM City had 1,446 traffic accidents, causing 275 deaths and 894 injuries. The number of traffic accidents and injuries were down by 2.95% and 25.75% on-year, but the number of deaths increased 1.85% on-year.

The department reported that among 34 traffic congestion hotspots in the city, 18 have seen improvements against last month, while the remaining places such as the area around Tan Son Nhat International Airport and Cat Lai Port has remained almost unchanged or actually worsened.

The city’s slow improvement in easing traffic jams has been attributed to too many private vehicles and businesses using the street for their activities.

Bui Xuan Cuong, director of the city’s Department of Transport also pointed out that frequent flooding has also worsened traffic congestion in HCM City.

HCM City is boosting the construction pace of many large transport projects to reduce traffic jams such as Long Kieng Bridge, the bridge linking Vo Van Kiet Street and Nguyen Tri Phuong Bridge and upgraded roads around Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
