The Ministry of Transport has approved a project to upgrade Vinh airport in central Nghe An province with total investment of VND3 trillion (about US$128.5 million).

Accordingly, a second terminal (T2 terminal) will be built at the airport, which is able to serve five million passengers per year, along with an airport apron in front of the terminal.

Construction of the terminal and apron are scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2019 and be completed in late 2020.

In addition, many major projects are underway at the airport, including one to upgrade a domestic terminal to an international one, and other to expand and repair existing aprons.

The upgrade of the airport aims to meet Nghe An’s socio-economic development requirements, particularly in tourism development.

The Vinh airport currently serves seven routes and handles about 34 flights a day, with two international air routes to Laos and Thailand. It recently showed signs of overloading, especially at peak time.

By 2020, the airport is set to become a 4E-class international airport, which is able to receive aircraft of E, D, C codes.
