Can Tho Children’s Hospital is overloaded and many have to rest near the elevators due to the rising number of hand, foot, mouth patients.

Child patients suffer from hand, foot, mouth disease

Can Tho Children’s Hospital received 1,300 child patients in the first two weeks of October, doubling over the same period in 2017. About 200 to 300 patients go to the hospital each day. There are many children from the nearby provinces in the Mekong Delta region. Most of them are under three years old, had high fevers and diarrhoea when they were admitted.

Thach Thi So Phanh from Phong Phu Commune said, "My daughter is only 20 months old. Her condition is serious and she can't eat much. We have to use a mat to lay on the ground."

Dr Huynh Hung Dung said two or three children have to share one bed. The whole hospital has only 500 beds and the ward of infectious diseases has 80 beds so they had to make use of another room for nearly 140 beds which are not enough for over 200 children.

Some patients are sent to stay at other wards or out in the hallways. They are also short of staff due to the surge in patients.

"The condition of the majority of children are not critical. Severe cases are admitted to special treatment rooms because they need ventilators and stricter monitoring system since their health can turn for the worst at any time," he said.

An infected child often has to be monitored at the hospital for a week or longer if the case is serious. Many mild cases suddenly turned for the worst in just one hour.
