Party chief holds talks with Cuban President

Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong warmly welcomed Cuban President Miguel Mario Diaz Canel Bermudes’ first official visit to Viet Nam during the pair’s talks in Ha Noi on Friday.

The two leaders briefed each other about recent developments in respective countries and discussed ways to further deepen the special long-lasting relationship in an effective and practical manner as well as regional and international issues of common concerns.

Party chief Trong extended congratulations to the people of Cuba on their recent development achievements, expresing his belief that Cuba would continue gaining greater achievements in the future.

He thanked the Government and people of Cuba for their solidarity and valuable support for Viet Nam so far, affirming Viet Nam attaches importance to advance the bilateral ties for mutual benefits and for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

Cuban President Miguel Mario Diaz Canel Bermudes showed his great admiration for Viet Nam’s glorious history and President Ho Chi Minh, highly valuing the Southeast Asian country’s reform results over the past nearly three decades.

Cuba is resolved to further strengthen cooperation with Viet Nam and wishes to learn Viet Nam’s development experience, affirmed President Miguel Mario Diaz Canel Bermudes.

The two sides welcomed and underlined the importance of the new trade agreement and the protocol on financial disbursement and management of rice production project for 2019-2023 signed during the Cuban President’s ongoing visit.

The leaders agreed to task inferior levels to strive to raise the two-way trade value to US$500 million by 2022 from the current US$240 million.

Both sides expressed their pleasure at increasingly coordination and mutual support at international organizations and multilateral forums, especially the United Nations and Non-Aligned Movement among others.

The pair shared that view that sovereignty and territorial disputes must be settled through peaceful measures on the basis of international law.

Earlier the same day, on behalf of the Vietnamese State, Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong bestowed the Ho Chi Minh Order upon the Cuban President in recognition of his contribution to the bilateral friendship and cooperation.
