Ministry of Health announces top nine events of 2018

The Ministry of Health have announced its nine most outstanding events for the year on December 26.

 

A lung transplant at Vietnam-Germany Hospital



1. The Institute of Vaccine and Medical Biologicals and the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) successfully tested and are ready to produce two influenza vaccines which are set to be licensed by 2019.

There is an inactivated trivalent seasonal influenza vaccine that targets A/H1N1, A/H3N2 and B and an inactivated pre-pandemic influenza vaccine that targets A/H5N1. The vaccines met the World Health Organisation's GMP standards and given JICA President Award 2018. Locally-produced vaccines will help cut cost and make Vietnam become more pro-active with disease prevention works. Vietnam has received the first order from the World Health Organisation.

2. The WHO announced that Vietnam has eliminated lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem. The LF prevention programme has been widely implemented in Vietnam since 2002 under WHO's guidance.

3. The Ministry of Health won a 2018 Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards for Global Tobacco Control held on March 7 in South Africa at the conference on Tobacco or Health. Vietnam was honoured and given USD100,000 for its achievements in the monitoring of tobacco use and prevention policies category.

4. Vietnamese doctors successfully transplanted six organs, including two lungs, two kidneys, a liver and a heart, from one donor to four patients for the first time. After 10 days, all the patients showed signs of recovery.


5. More than 81.5 million Vietnamese people, nearly 87% of the population, were covered by health insurance by the end of June. It is 2.3% higher than the goal set by the National Assembly.

6. All 63 cities and provinces joined in the online pharmacy network in accordance with a prime ministerial directive about using technology in pharmacy management. 15,178 retail stores made an account to join the network with 55,000 types of medicines.

7. Vietnam started a pilot programme to rotate doctors to work at communal medical stations which have no skilled doctors and 35.4% of the patients who visit central-level hospitals can be treated at both the provincial and district level hospitals. 26 medical stations were selected and given modern equipment to improve overall quality.

8. 70% of the unnecessary business conditions and administrative procedures have been removed. It is estimated that individuals and firms can save up to VND8.5m a day from the cut.

9. ComBE Five vaccine have been used nationwide to replace Quinvaxem after the South Korean producer stopped making Quinvaxem. ComBE Five has received the World Health Organisation’s pre-qualification approval and can also help fight against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenza type B.
