Ambassador of Indonesia to Vietnam, H.E. Ibnu Hadi, and Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University (USSH VNU) Hanoi, Professor Pham Quang Minh, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on February 15 on teaching the Indonesian language at USSH VNU Hanoi.

In his remarks, Ambassador Hadi conveyed his appreciation to USSH VNU Hanoi for its efforts in promoting the Indonesian language in Vietnam and hoped it would be continuously taught. He encouraged students who enroll in Indonesian language classes to further study Indonesia and its language through the Darmasiswa scholarship.

He also invited two students with the best results to undertake a study trip to Indonesia.

Following Ambassador Hadi’s remarks, Professor Minh said that teaching the Indonesian language at USSH VNU Hanoi is part of the duty and mission of the university to contribute to increasing Vietnam’s role in ASEAN through teaching the fourth most-spoken language in the world and the most-spoken in ASEAN. USSH VNU Hanoi is proud to be the first university in Hanoi to have the Indonesian language in its curriculum.

The Indonesian language course will be taught starting on February 18, with the support of an Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) teacher from the Center of Strategic Development and Language Diplomacy at Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture. The course, with four classes a week, will be part of the Southeast Asia study program in the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

The teaching of the Indonesian language at USSH VNU Hanoi is also part of an MoU on education signed in 2017 during the visit by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to Jakarta. This effort is expected to further strengthen the strategic partnership between Indonesia and Vietnam by encouraging Vietnam’s younger generation to become more familiar with Indonesia.

The Indonesian Embassy in Hanoi first opened an Indonesian language program last August in two locations: the Indonesian Promotion Center, Umah Indo, which is open to the public, and Hanoi University, as an extracurricular program. The Indonesian language programs in both locations received a positive response, with the number of students reaching 200.
