US and Vietnamese leaders meet in Hanoi ahead of summit

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday morning had a meeting with Communist Party of Vietnam General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and US Ambassador to Vietnam Dan Kritenbrink attend the meeting.


The US and Vietnamese leaders witnessed the signing of some cooperation agreements between ministries and firms of the two countries, including a Boeing aircraft purchase worth USD 15 billion of Vietnam's Vietjet Air Bamboo Airlines.



 

After meeting Trong, President Trump will meet PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and the two leaders will lunch together.


President Trump arrived in Hanoi late on Tuesday evening to attend the second North Korea-US summit on February 27 and 28.

The US President will have meetings with Vietnamese state and government leaders before meeting with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later today.

According to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Le Hoai Trung, President Trump's visit was not an official state visit but he would have meetings with Vietnamese leaders to discuss bilateral co-operation between the two countries.
