The southern central province of Phu Yen has been hit by African swine fever, becoming the 58th locality in the country ravaged by the epidemic.

According to Dao Ly Nhi, deputy director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, samples from pigs raised by a household in EaBar Commune, Song Hinh District have been tested positive for the virus following the disease symptoms from June 11.

The household has culled 21 pigs and sterilised their farm. Local authorities have also disinfected surrounding areas.

Local residents have been advised to tighten control over their pigs to timely detect the epidemic. They are also encouraged to turn into raising chicken or cows, instead of pigs amid the current situation.

African swine fever was first detected in Vietnam in early February. It has no cure but does not affect humans.
