Deputy Minister Bui Thanh Son of Foreign Affairs speaks with the media on November 21

Deputy Minister Bui Thanh Son of Foreign Affairs made the announcement on November 21. Families can work with local authorities in Hai Phong, Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Thua Thien-Hue provinces to repay the loans.

When being asked what about the firms that have offered help, Son said they could work together with the families to help them repay their loans.

Vietnamese authorities are working with their UK counterparts about technical and procedural problems as several families have agreed for the bodies to be cremated.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also published the costs on their web portal. The victims will be cremated and their ashes will be transported to Vietnam for VND41m (USD1,300). Other cases will cost over VND66m (USD2,200) including the coffin.

The families must submit a letter to request for assistance to the authorities, giving the authority to the government to organise the transportation and an agreement to repay the cost. Localities authorities must have plans to receive and transfer the victims to their hometowns from the local airport.

Bui Huy Cuong, vice chairman of Can Loc District, Ha Tinh Province, said eight victims were from Can Loc. The families and authorities agreed on the transportation methods. The families also said they could afford the cost so they only want to bring their family members home as soon as possible.

"However, we haven't got an exact date and time yet," Cuong said.

One of the victim’s fathers Nguyen Dinh Gia said he wanted to bring the body of his son home and hoped that the authorities in both Vietnam and UK would help to complete the procedures quickly.

On October 23, 39 bodies were found in a lorry in Essex, UK. On November 8, the police in the UK and Vietnam announced that all of the victims were Vietnamese. 21 of them were from Nghe An, 10 from Ha Tinh, three from Hai Phong, three from Quang Binh and one each were from Hai Duong and Thua Thien-Hue provinces.
