"Our first child was born in 2009. Because of poverty, we waited until 2017 to have the second child but he was born prematurely and died after 20 days," Giang said. "Our next child, Tran Thi Hoa Le, had to stay in the incubator."
Le only weighed 900g at birth. She luckily recovered from the critical condition with the help of the doctors at Nghe An Maternity - Paediatric Hospital. Giang and Phung then brought Le to Hanoi where she was diagnosed with respiratory failure, pneumonia, pulmonary hypertension, umbilical and inguinal hernia.
Giang has an enlarged spleen, vestibular disorders and stomach problem. Tran Van Phung is being treated for asthma but he still works hard to pay for Le's treatment. He does any work he can from selling crabs to mowing grass and laying bricks. They sold everything and borrowed VND200m from neighbours and relatives but the money has run out so they brought Le home.
"We already sold our pigs and buffalo. We don't know what to do so we brought her home. We can't afford the treatment," Phung said.
The family thought Le would die at birth but she survived. However, they can't borrow money anymore while doctors said she still needed to stay at the hospital for a few months. Giang and Phung also take care of their nephew who lost both parents over a decade ago. Their nephew has gone to the southern provinces to find work to support the family.
Nguyen Tho Tuy, chairman of Nhan Thanh Commune People's Committee, said, "Giang's family is one of our most difficult cases. We have done our best to help them in the past year and we hope they will get help to save their daughter."
