Addressing the opening ceremony, Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' ASEAN Department Vu Ho said that maritime co-operation has gained in significance and is now a priority for ASEAN member countries and their co-operation partners.

The event will improve the co-ordination of humanitarian relief and disaster responses, and will also discuss how to manage and protect marine ecosystems, biodiversity and aquatic resources, and boost co-operation regarding the member states’ respective fishery sectors, he noted.

In addition, the Vietnamese official also urged ASEAN countries to actively exchange and propose solutions to consolidate and further enhance the role of the ASEAN Marine Forum in promoting dialogue and coordinating on maritime issues in the region.

Established in 2010, the AMF aims to increase solidarity within ASEAN and promote the association’s central role in maritime co-operation as well as building trust in the region through negotiations and consultations, particularly in regard to ensuring maritime security and safety in the East Sea in accordance with international law, the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).
