The baby, who was the only child patient infected with the deadly virus in Vietnam so far, was released from the Hanoi-based National Children's Hospital on Thursday morning.

According to director of the hospital, Le Thanh Hai, the child started to cough and have a running nose and then tested positive for coronavirus on February 11.

"She was infected with the virus while staying with her grandmother who also got it from a 23-year-old worker who returned from Wuhan City in January," the doctor said.

The child was admitted to Binh Xuyen District Medical Centre in her Vinh Phuc hometown before being taken to the National Children's Hospital for better monitoring and treatment.

According to the doctor, the child had mild symptoms with slight fever and minor lung problems.

"We didn’t have to apply any special treatment methods," he said. "We just treated the coughs and tried to give her good nutrition. Her mother, who was negative for the virus during multiple tests, stayed with her child and give her breast milk."

Doctor Hai said that the child recovered very well and showed negative results for the virus in two latest tests.

"They will be monitored for some more time at the Binh Xuyen District Medical Centre," he said.

So far, Vietnam has gradually developed an effective treatment plan for coronavirus patients with 15 out of 16 infected cases successfully treated, the Ministry of Health said.

Speaking at a conference on Wednesday, Dr Lương Ngọc Khue, director of the ministry’s Department of Medical Examination and Treatment and deputy head of the sub-committee on treatment at the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control said although there are no specific drugs that kill the virus, the treatment regime applied has proved to be working.

Even those successfully treated reported underlying diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and lung cancer.

Khue said since the early days of the epidemic, the health sector had immediately convened the professional council with leading professors to develop and update guidelines for early treatment.

These guidelines have been implemented at hospitals and health clinics nationwide. After the first three patients were discharged from HCM City’s Cho Ray Hospital, Khanh Hoa Tropical Hospital in central Khanh Hoa Province and Thanh Hoa Province General Hospital in central Thanh Hoa Province, the committee continued to adjust their treatment regimen.

Specific treatment steps, including initial reception instructions, quarantine, drug usage and emergency equipment for critically-ill patients have been updated to deal with the epidemic.

No new infected cases have been reported in the country since February 13. Among the 16 people that tested positive, none have become severely ill and no fatalities will be reported, he said.
