Lan and her husband came to Dak Nong to find jobs nearly 20 years ago. They made enough to support the family. But in 2007, a fire broke out at their house, burning all of their savings. When Lan tried to take some money out, she suffered burns to 80% of her body. After 42 days in the hospital and dozens of operations, Lan stopped her treatment and returned home as there is nothing else left to sell.
"I told my husband to let me die at home. My child will starve if I keep staying in the hospital. Luckily, my wounds kept healing afterwards and I recovered," she said.

However, she still suffers great pains during bad weather. In 2019, she had to cut off a finger due to shrinking skin.In 2015, unusual bumps appeared on Lan's 15-year-old son body. He was diagnosed with cartilage dysplasia and cartilage tumours. But only five years later that they had enough money for his surgery. The tumour on his legs grew so large that he couldn't walk anymore. If he isn't treated quickly, the tumours will affect the nerves and may cause paralysis.
"He was in so much pain that he couldn't sleep. We borrowed everywhere for his treatment. Doctors said more tumours would appear and tumours in dangerous locations must be removed first. Dozens of tumours are growing on his groin," Lan said.
The whole family is now dependent on their small field. Lan is a worker for little income. In late 2018, Lan's husband found out that he had bone cancer. He also can't go to the hospital since they have no money.
"We don't even have enough money to treat our son. Where will we find the money for radiotherapy? I just live as long as I can," Bac said. "When we brought out son to the hospital that we knew that we are no longer in the poverty household list so we don't get any allowance. We just want to treat our son."
