Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has agreed to allow some 14,000 Vietnamese nationals abroad to return home amid the on-going Covid-19 pandemic in many countries.

According to the prime minister, it was important to take Covid-19 prevention measures to ensure that the country would not face the second wave of the pandemic. He asked authorities to keep up the good work and be ready to deploy fast contact-tracing measures if a new case is discovered, and government-run quarantine sites must also always stand ready.

The health sector has been urged to make careful preparations for disease prevention and control, based on the five principles of prevention-detection-isolation-zoning and controlling.

Under the government leader’s instruction, agencies need to closely co-operate to bring Vietnamese nationals in foreign countries home. He has allowed some 14,000 Vietnamese people abroad who mostly are those aged below 18 years old, students, the elderly, sick individuals, tourists and migrant workers whose work visas have expired.

Phuc has also permitted the entry of diplomats, businesspeople, investors and experts to Vietnam, even for less than 14 days. They, however, need to be quarantined as regulated.

The Ministry of Transport has been assigned to increase more flights to receive Vietnamese people and foreigners.

He emphasised that the government had not yet allowed the entry of international tourists into Vietnam. “This has been the consistent stance from the government and I ask that all sectors, agencies and local governments to stay on high alert to protect the health of the people, adding that we should not be impatient and complacent as all the achievements made so far in combating the pandemic could be wiped out,” Phuc said.

The Ministry of Defence has been asked to tighten control over border areas to detect illegal cross border traffic as part of Covid-19 prevention.

The Covid-19 Prevention and Control Steering Committee have to identify foreign markets which are safe for Vietnamese airlines to resume their flights.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese workers are only to go to countries which are in need of and basically safe with Covid-19 such as Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.
