The Ministry of Health has registered to buy the Covid-19 vaccine from Russia, said Vu Tuan Cuong, head of the Vietnam Drug Administration under the ministry.

The move follows the outbreak of the pandemic in the country which has started since July 25 in the central city of Danang.

The ministry, however, said that the vaccine supply would depend on the pace of clinical testing. In addition, Vietnam’s vaccine testing process before new vaccines are introduced is often strict and time-consuming, Cuong added.

Vietnam is also co-operating with other international vaccine producers to register for their vaccine and to seek assistance in the Covid-19 vaccine production in Vietnam.

Vietnam’s Company for Vaccine and Biological Production 1 is also working with UK’s Bristol University to produce Covid-19 vaccine, using virus vector technology which has never been used in Vietnam before.

The Institute of Vaccines and Biological Medical is co-operating with the US’s PATH Organisation for the same production.

Vaccines produced by the Centre for Research and Production of Vaccines and Biologicals and Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology have also shown initial positive results.
