Japanese firm fined over VND300m for environmental protection violations

A Japanese company in Thanh Hoa Province has been fined VND335m (USD14,500) for violating environmental protection regulations.

  

Lionas Metals fined for violating environmental protection regulations


Thanh Hoa People's Committee announced on March 17 that they had issued the fine to Lionas Metals company in Hai Thuong Commune for various violations and ordered them to immediately fix all the issues.

Lionas Metals have buried 79.7 tonnes of household waste and industrial solid waste illegally. They also exploited water sources and discharged 15 cubic metres of wastewater into the environment without permits.

Lionas Metals was Ferrochrome Thanh Hoa Company which was put into operation in October 2014 with the capacity to produce 15,000 tonnes of ferrochrome a year. Due to slow business, Ferrochrome Thanh Hoa's operation was halted in May 2015.

In late 2018, Lionas Fund from Japan invested in the company and changed its name to Lionas Metals on December 31, 2020.

On January 6, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police Department conducted an inspection at Lionas Metals and found many violations. The police asked the provincial people's committee to find the company in accordance with the law.

Lionas Metals must also pay all the costs for testing, measuring and analysing the collected samples.
