DPRK Today, a newspaper of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), ran an article on May 12 urging the Republic of Korea (ROK) to resume the operation of the Kaesong Industrial Complex, emphasising that it is not an issue that needs US approval.

The paper said that in order to facilitate the process to improve inter-Korean relations, the ROK needs to accelerate the re-opening of the Kaesong Industrial Complex in the DPRK’s territory near the border between the two countries.

The ROK closed the industrial zone in February 2016 after a series of the DPRK’s nuclear and missile tests.

In the meantime, ROK officials said they are seeking to reopen the Kaesong Industrial Complex and the tourism programme on the DPRK’s Mount Kumgang to facilitate the peace process but have been unable to do so due to international sanctions on the DPRK.
