The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has finalised its process to recruit a new coach for the men’s national football squad, and the selected candidate is Falko Goetz, former coach of Germany’s Hertha Berlin FC.

VFF Chair Nguyen Trong Hy confirmed that after the federation and the German coach reached agreements on salary and set the goals for the team, VFF has booked air tickets for the coach and his assistant to Vietnam.

The federation asked Goetz to be in Vietnam by May 30, to check the draft contract for the last time before signing it, to become the chief coach of the national squad as of June 1.

After the contract is signed, Goetz will be an “observer”, while acting coach Mai Duc Chung leads the team at the first qualifier round of the World Cup 2014, in the games against Macau. At the same time, coach Phan Thanh Hung will instruct the Olympic team at the first qualifier round of the Olympic 2012, against Arab Saudi.

It is planned that Goetz will be given a two-year deal to lead the Vietnamese squad. He will receive USD25,000 a month (not including bonus), including USD13,000 from the General Department ò Sports and Physical Training and USD12,000 from the VFF.

The first duty that Goetz must perform is to take the Olympic team to the championship of the Southeast Asian Games 2011 (SEA Games) in Indonesia later this year.

German\'s Falko Goetz, 49, is described as a qualified coach who introduces a coaching style that suits Vietnamese football.

Goetz managed German elite club Hertha Berlin from 2004-2007. In his competition career, he played as a forward for FCs Dynamo, Bayer Leverkusen, Galatasaray and Hertha Berlin.

The seat of Vietnam’s coach has been left empty since early March, after the resignation of Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto, who had cited unfair public criticism by the Vietnamese media against him and his men after their failure at the 2010 Suzuki Cup as the main reason.
