After Van Dien, other cemeteries like Mai Dich, Xuan Dinh, Van Phuc and Yen Ky 1 will be shut down in the next three years, because of being out of land. Hanoi will build 12 new cemeteries to serve people.

Hanoi to close big cemeteries

Owing to urbanisation, land for cemeteries of Hanoi is being narrowed. Hanoi’s big cemeteries like Yen Ky 1 (38ha) and Van Dien (18ha) are now out of land. Other big cemeteries like Mai Dich, Xuan Dinh, Van Phuc and Sai Dong are about to have no land left in the next 3 years.

Small cemeteries inside the city are also overloaded and most of them were closed. Many Hanoians have to buy land in private cemeteries of Lac Hong Vien in Hoa Binh province and Vinh Hang in Ba Vi, Hanoi, at high prices.

According to Hanoi’s cemetery development plan to 2020, the total area devoted to cemeteries in the city’s urban area will be 273 hectare and 63 hectares in the rural area. The areas will be doubled by 2030.

The city will have to remove over 287,000 tombs in the inner city to develop new residential areas. Separate tombs will be also moved into big cemeteries to prevent environmental pollution.

Before 2015, six big cemeteries will be closed and developed into cemetery-parks. At the same time, 12 new cemeteries will be built in Hanoi’s suburban districts of Dong Anh, Me Linh, Soc Son, Gia Long and Phu Xuyen. Each commune will have at least one cemetery.

By 2020, Hanoi will also build 30 funeral houses.
