President’s meetings on the fringes of Asian-African Conference

On April 23, President Truong Tan Sang attended the fourth and the fifth plenary sessions of the Asian-African Conference in Jakarta, Indonesia and met leaders from Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Mozambique.

 


Meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, President Sang affirmed Vietnam attaches great importance to developing relations and  all-round cooperation with Iran while expressing his delight at the recent developments of Iran as well as the initial positive results of the P5+1 negotiations, appreciating Iran’s presidential role of the Non-Aligned Movement for the 2012-2015 term.

President Hassan Rouhani told Sang the Iranian people admire Vietnam’s tremendous renewal achievements, saying his nation is keen to strengthen the multifaceted cooperation with the Southeast Asian nation, especially in economics and culture.

The two leaders agreed to intensify all-level exchange visits, maintain and consolidate sound political relations and suggested both sides should examine ways to push up trade links and create favourable conditions for businesses to seek more investment opportunities.

President Rouhani argued that as an active ASEAN member, Vietnam can join hands with Iran to serve as a bridge between the regional grouping and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), which includes seven Asian and three Eurasian nations.

On the occasion, President Sang invited Hassan Rouhani to visit Vietnam and his invitation was accepted with great pleasure.

Receiving Kim Yong Nam President, Presidium of the (DPRK) Supreme People's Assembly, President Sang praised the two sides’ efforts to jointly hold numerous activities marking 65 years of diplomatic relations (1950-2015), including the exchange of high level visits as a contribution to deepening mutual understanding and the ties of traditional friendship between the two peoples.

For his part, Kim Yong Nam expressed his good impression of the official visit to Vietnam in August, 2012, congratulating the remarkable achievements the Vietnamese people recorded in the nation-building process and reiterating his nation’s wish to forge the time-honoured friendship Vietnam.

The two leaders underlined the need maintain contacts and exchange visits at all levels, promote the efficiency of Intergovernmental Committee mechanisms and take measures to further promote economic and trade cooperation and fully exploit the strengths of each country.

They also proposed maintaining delegation exchanges and boosting closer coordination at multilateral forums, particularly the Non-Aligned Movement.

President Sang affirmed Vietnam consistently advocates a peaceful nuclear-fee Korean peninsula, dialogues, reconciliation, cooperation and unification between the two Koreas.

At a reception for Mozambique Foreign Minister Odemiro Baloi, the Vietnamese State leader congratulated the Frelimo Party for winning the elections in 2014, hailing the traditional friendship and close-knit relations between the two Parties and States and peoples.

Sang also suggested launching celebratory activities regarding the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Mozambique (1975-2015) and further stepping up bilateral cooperation in trade, telecommunications, agriculture, health care, education and human resource development.

He also asked both nations to closely cooperate and support each other at international forums, confirming Vietnam’s willingness to share socio-economic development experience with Mozambique and calling on the African nation to facilitate Vietnamese investment.
