Su-30MK2 aircraft gone missing on training exercise

A Su-30MK2 multi-role fighter aircraft has gone missing during a training exercise off the coast of Nghe An this morning, June 14.

Radar lost the aircraft's signal just some minutes after it took off from Tho Xuan Airport in Thanh Hoa Province at around 7.29 am.

Colonel Luong Hong Phong from Nghe An Province's Military Command told Dan Tri that they were informed this morning that the aircraft numbered 8585 was missing around Mat Island some 40 kilometres from Vinh City.

Vietnamese Air Force Deputy Commander General Do Minh Tuan said that there were two pilots on the aircraft. Both are still missing.

Senior Lieutenant Colonel Phan Van Xuan from Nghe An Province's Border Guard force said that they have sent three ships with 35 rescue crew to look for the aircraft around Hon Mat Island.

“We have not yet found the craft, Xuan said. "The rescue team is still making all efforts to find the aircraft and the pilot."


A helicopter is looking for the missing aircraft on June 14 afternoon.

The advanced fighter aircraft is among 36 Su-30MK2 units which the Vietnamese Air Force bought from Russia last year.
