PM Phuc meets Australian counterpart, UN Secretary General

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull expressed their pleasure at the robust development of the Vietnam-Australia comprehensive partnership while meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summits in Vientiane, Laos on September 8.

PM Phuc pledged to create favorable conditions for foreign investors to expand investment in Vietnam while asking the Australian side to further open its market for Vietnamese farm produce.

He spoke highly of the support offered by the Australian Government to help Vietnam in infrastructure development, education and training, poverty reduction and clean water supply.

PM Phuc also suggested Australia continue assistance for climate change adaptation, sustainable development, and effective deployment of education and training cooperation programs.

The two leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, security and cooperation in the East Sea; heightening the rule of law, and settling disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Both dies agreed to enhance cooperation to realize the above goals.

At the meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, PM Phuc highly appreciated the important contributions of the UN, particularly to the fight against global challenges.

PM Phuc expressed his hope that the UN would continue promoting its leading role in safeguarding peace and security, supporting countries to successfully implement major agreements, especially the 2030 Agenda and Paris agreement on climate change.

As an active and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam vowed to participate actively in the UN-led efforts and initiatives, PM Phuc affirmed.

He also asked the UN to continue assisting Vietnam in realizing sustainable development goals and adapting to climate change.

Mr. Ban highly appreciated the support and close collaboration between Vietnam and the UN, affirming that the UN will stand side by side with Vietnam to achieve the sustainable development goals and cope with climate change to contribute to socio-economic development in the country.
