Hai Phong urged to become smart city with good living environment
The northern port city of Hai Phong should make full use of its status as the gateway to the sea for the northern region, developing its seaport, services, tourism and logistics to spearhead local development.
The city was the largest attractor of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the first eight months of 2016, drawing approximately US$2.66 billion—five times higher than in the same period last year. The port city reported 30 newly licensed projects and 21 existing projects registering to adjust capital, notably including the LG Display Hai Phong project, licensed on April 15, with a registered capital of US$1.5 billion.
Hai Phong’s state budget collection for the first eight months of the year amounted to VND43.365 trillion (over US$1.93 billion), increasing by 42.3% year on year. The sum also satisfied 100% of the city’s yearly target.
PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked the city to promote both its potential and developed industries, such as mechanical manufacturing, shipbuilding, the support industry, seafood processing and the production of equipment, electronics, cement, steel, fertiliser and high-quality consumer goods.
The city needs to develop a deep-water seaport system and transport infrastructure, warehouse and port services, maritime transport, a sea-based economy, finance, banking, trade and high value-added services, along with focusing on the development of agricultural and rural economic production, he said.
The Government leader also reminded Hai Phong to continue maintaining political stability, social safety and order, because the city is located at a strategic area in terms of the national defence and security.
More attention should be paid to improving administrative procedures in investment, construction and land management, while accelerating the implementation of major projects to boost the city’s and region’s development, he added.
The city should also continue to exert more effort to affirm its role as the main gateway to the sea for the northern provinces and a focal point of growth for the northern economic region, he noted.
