Foreign Ministry Spokesman Le Hai Binh on Thursday told reporters that Vietnam will verify the news saying that China has almost finished building more than 20 structures in artificial islands in the East Sea.

The structures appear to house long-range surface-to-air missiles.

Vietnam has full legal grounds and historical evidence affirming its sovereignty over both Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes, stated the Spokesman.

He underlined Vietnam’s consistent position of settling disputes in the East Sea through peaceful measures in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and of fully and effectively abiding by the Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).

All activities to construct and transform structures in Hoang Sa and Truong Sa areas without Vietnam’s permission are forbidden, said Binh.

Vietnam urges relevant parties to act responsibly and take no actions that may further complicate the situation, especially militarization, threaten peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea.
