A widow in Hai Duong Province is calling for financial help to support her children who both suffer from cerebral palsy.

Vu Thi Huyen, 45, was born in Ba Dong, a poor village of Binh Giang District. Not long after the marriage, her husband suddenly died after falling sick. Huyen was three months into pregnancy at that time.

After her son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Huyen returned to her hometown to live with her mother. Her son was 15 years old but still has the mind of a child.

Before she died, Huyen's mother told her to have another child to depend on when she got old so Huyen decided to have a second child with an unnamed man.

"When doctors detected something wrong with his brain, I was already seven months into pregnancy. My relatives told me to abort him but I'd rather die. He was already a human being, what mother can take away his life like that?" Huyen said.

At 17 months old, Huyen's second son, Vu Xuan Anh, can't sit up or talk. In addition, his health is weak and he is often sick.

"He's a good boy. He only cries when he is too sick and hungry. Doctors in Hanoi told me to bring him to hospital for check-ups once every two months so that he would have the chance of normal development. But I was only able to take him to hospital one time. That's when he had pneumonia," Huyen said.

According to her, their family is struggling to have daily meals let alone paying for hospital charges.

On the days her children are not sick and she can ask other people to look after them, Huyen works as a freelancer for a nearby textile factory. That's also when they can eat, as the factory owner provides her with food.

Vu Dinh Chinh, head of Ba Dong Village, said, "Everyone knows her situation but we can only help them with rice and vegetables. We hope the community will help improve their living condition and help treat her children."
