Thousands of people gathered at the Thu Bon River in the central province of Quang Nam on Friday to celebrate the inauguration of the much-awaited Giao Thuy Bridge.

The last ferry servicing Duy Xuyen and Dai Loc districts across the river operated on Friday morning before the opening of the bridge.

Speaking at the ceremony, deputy director of Quang Nam Provincial Construction Project Management Board, Do Xuan Anh, said the Giao Thuy Bridge is a dream of local people here for a long time.

"The bridge will help link districts including Dai Loc, Duy Xuyen, Nong Son, and Que Son," Anh said. "It will also help shorten the way to Danang City."

The Giao Thuy Bridge over the Thu Bon river was part of an important route linking the mountainous districts of central Quang Nam province and Da Nang city.

The bridge which started construction in March 2015, runs more than a kilometre long and cost VND823 billion (USD37.9 million).

The bridge is expected to boost economic development in the western area of Quang Ngai province.

The old Giao Thuy Bridge was built before 1975 but it was put out of use during the war, forcing local residents to use ferries to cross the Thu Bon River, which is highly dangerous during the flooding season.
