HCM City considers opening huge pedestrian area
The Department of Transport in HCM City is considering opening a pedestrian area that covers 220 hectares in the city centre.
The pedestrian area will include main streets in the city's centre such as Le Duan, Pasteur, Hai Ba Trung, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Dong Khoi and some streets in District 1. There are many headquarters of state agencies and well-known destinations in this area such as the headquarters of HCM City People's Committee, People's Court, the Opera House and Ben Thanh Market.
Parking lots will be opened in the streets nearby. People can also travel by bus and in the future, by the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line.
According to the plan, the city will select some routes that connect with existing pedestrian streets to start the project. During the first phase, the streets will opened for pedestrians only during the weekends and holidays. Gradually, vehicles will be banned from entering the area.
On March 24, the Department of Transport had a meeting with the Vietnam-German Transport Research Centre to discuss the project. The department will carry out the research and report to the city people's committee by April 30.
