Two children face hunger as father suffers from mental illness
Siblings in Ha Nam Province are facing uncertain future after their mother died and their father is mentally ill.
Nguyen Thi Dung is in third grade and Nguyen Hoang Hiep is only in second grade. Their house is sparsely decorated with only a table, a couple of chairs and two beds. Their mother died a year ago from lung cancer. Dung said she missed her mother but knew that she wouldn't be returning.
"I also miss her. I want to be with my mother," Hiep said.
Their father has suffered from mental illness since 2009. He often sits quietly by himself, doesn't talk with other people and wanders alone. Sometimes, Dung and Hiep have to go out at midnight to find their father.
"My grandfather used a flashlight and we followed behind. We worry that my father would fell down a river or channel somewhere," Dung said.
Do Van Thich, party secretary of Village 10, said, "The neighbours often give the children rice or eggs. But the school fees are a difficult problem. Their grandfather can't afford it. Their father has been ill for years. When he has a fit, he will yell and destroy furniture nearby."
Dung and Hiep have to take care of themselves and their father. They learn to sew the old clothes given by other people.
Nguyen Duc Quan, head of Village 10, said, "They love their father really much. They help feed him and clean his face. We really feel for them."
