Le Thanh Tung claims gold at Gymnastics World Cup

Le Thanh Tung brought home the first gold medal for Vietnam at the ongoing 2017 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Doha, Qatar after producing a brilliant performance in the men’s vault category.


Le Thanh Tung has added a World Cup gold to his medal collection. 

Tung earned 14.833 points for his first jump, behind Armenian Artur Davtyan with 15 points.

In the second jump, the Vietnamese gymnast continued to impress spectators scoring 14.633 points, while Davtyan failed to live up to expectations, only scoring 13.866.

With 14.733 points on average, Tung overcame Davtyan to take the top honour. The Armenian gymnast settled for silver, while the bronze medal went to Heikki of Finland with 14.366 points.

Earlier in the preliminary round, Tung also performed outstandingly taking the lead with 14.750 points.

Despite his young age of 22, Tung has possessed an impressive collection of international achievements, including a silver at the 2013 world championships and two vault gold medals (one in the individual and one in the team event) at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.

Tung’s teammates Pham Phuoc Hung and Dinh Phuong Thanh ended up in fifth and sixth place in the men’s parallel bars with 14.600 and 14.466 points, respectively. The gold medal in this category was claimed by Chinese Zou Jingyuan with 15.900 points, while the silver medal went to German Marcel Nguyen with 15.066 points.

The 10th biennial Gymnastics World Cup will conclude on March 27.
