Police in Hanoi have arrested five men for trading a tiger to make glue.

The police in Dong Da District said on May 24 that they had charged the men under laws protecting endangered species and the illegal possession of narcotics.

Five men, Le Hong Van, Nguyen Thanh Cong, Tran Van Nghia, Dau Duc Le and Dau Duc Khinh from Dien Bien, Ha Tinh and Nghe An provinces were arrested early May in Hanoi.

Five men arrested for trading a tiger

According to the police, in early May, a customer ordered a tiger at the price of VND7m (USD308) per kilo and agreed to pay an additional sum of VND40m to make tiger glue. Le Hong Van received the order and proceeded to buy a 200-kg tiger in Nghe An for VND1bn (USD44,000).

Van used VND30m (USD1,300) to hire Nguyen Thanh Cong to bring the tiger to Hanoi by truck and hired Tran Van Nghia, Dau Duc Le and Dau Duc Khinh to help in making the glue.

They were caught red-handed while meeting up in Tran Huu Tuoc Street.

The police seized the live tiger, a bag of serow bones and antlers and five grammes of narcotics which would be used to make tiger glue.

The tiger glue is believed to be an effective medicine but in reality, sellers can use other animal bones to maximise their profits and mix in pharmaceuticals, including, in this case opium to relieve pain immediately. Other medicines like anti-inflammatories and pain-killers are also sometimes used.

Both tiger and serows are listed and endangered animals.
