Hanoi’s authorities have asked local state officials to stop using public email services including Yahoo or Gmail in work in an attempt to tighten information security.

Hanoi bans officials from using public email services

Hanoi People's Committee have issued Document 4717 that asked all agencies to improve information security. After a monitoring time, it is discovered that many officials use simple passwords that can be easily cracked. Some networks don't have proper measures to review and protect the data.

In addition, the officials didn't know how to deal with cyber attacks and often click on suspicious links, work on public devices that might be prone to viruses and use email services like Gmail and Yahoo for work.

The Hanoi People's Committee office asked heads of all agencies to tighten the security at workplaces, starting with more secure passwords that should include a number, special and capitalised characters. The officials should also change passwords once every three months.

The officials are also warned against using their work email accounts on unknown devices or for personal purposes. They also must not accept emails sent from public email services in work or reveal their personal information.

The office of Hanoi People's Committee said they would not accept data for meetings if it is sent via public email services.
