Dozens of drug addicts escape rehab centre in Vinh Long

Dozens of drug addicts escaped a rehabilitation centre in the southern province of Vinh Long, with one later dying in an incident police claimed was a suicide.

According to the Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, on June 8, 17 drug users broke out of the centre and another 17 escaped the centre on the early morning of June 18.

The police captured 20 people and took them back to the centre, while they continue to search for the others. Dozens of drug addicts escaped a rehabilitation centre in the southern province of Vinh Long, with one later dying in an incident police claimed was a suicide.

One of the drug users, Thach Bao Ngoc, 20 years old, took some weapons with him while fleeing. He later died following an incident with police at Vinh Long hospital.

It is quite common to see drug users break out of rehabilitation centres in Vietnam.

Last year, around 600 drug addicts escaped from a rehabilitation centre in Dong Nai Province’s Xuan Loc District, causing havoc on Highway 1.

Earlier, around 450 drug addicts escaped from a rehabilitation centre in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.

According to officials figures, there are about 200,000 drug addicts in Vietnam of which about 13,000 are in treatment centres.
